A secret weapon for advancing students beyond matching in math activities

Well, hey Reader,

TL;DR - I’ve got some tips for you for engaging nonverbal students. Also, you can get my resource "Counting for Nonverbal Students" right now to help your students show you what they know!

During my first year as a teacher, I only had one nonverbal student, whom I'll refer to as K. Towards the end of the year, K surprised me by actively participating in our Calendar Time activity. He had been observing the entire year and suddenly approached the Smartboard to fill in the date and day of the week correctly! I was amazed because I had no idea he had been paying attention! Since then, my biggest fear as a teacher has been overlooking a student's abilities.

So, why am I telling you this story? I have developed some resources to help teachers avoid the mistake I made.

  • You can take your students beyond matching in your math lessons.
  • You can write IEP goals that your students will actually meet.
  • You can engage your students in multiple ways: paper and technology.
